Ulsoor Lake ? A Recreational Oasis on the Outskirts of Bangalore

The Ulsoor Lake is a water tank found on the north-eastern outskirts of Bangalore, on the eastern end of M. G. Road. The name of Ulsoor is derived from the locality of Halasuru, which is one of the most ancient settlements in the area. Renowned both as a site of great scenic beauty as well as a hub of recreation, the construction of this lake is believed to be as old as the settlement after which it is named, harking back to the second century to the reign of Kempe Gowda II. The tank was later reconstructed by the efforts of Lewin Bentham Bowring, the former British Commissioner of Bangalore.

The 125 acre lake is dotted with islets, to which visitors can travel via boat. Boating is naturally a popular activity here, as the boating club established near the lake can attest. A recreational complex complete with a swimming pool for those with doubts about the lake water is located near its shores. Shopping opportunities also abound in this vicinity, as do many former British residences and official buildings, as the site used to serve as a colonial encampment of the British Army. Also on the shores of these picturesque waters appears the intimate garden of Kensington Park, which is a favourite haunt of tourists who simply wish to kick back and soak in the tranquil ambience and sunshine.

The attractions lining the shores of this lake are not… Read the rest

Permissive Parenting a Spirited Child – Does Your Child Rule the Roost?

There truly are many approaches to parenting. Most of us who are raising children now grew up with authoritative parents, you know “do what I say and not what I do” and “because I said so, that’s why” type of parenting.

As new parents we remember those years of frustration at what we deemed as parenting without reflection. As adults, we’ve read all the parenting books, we subscribe to the parenting magazines, we want to be the best parents we can possibly be. We’re organic, natural – living, flexible and easy going. What’s not to adore? We’re going to show the world (and our own parents) that parenting means peaceful, loving kindness and that we have all the answers, before we have kids that is.

Along comes a child, maybe even a few. If you have a calm tempered baby than he will easily fit into the normal parenting boxes that all the books talk about, and permissive parenting works pretty well. Positive Parenting books will give you wonderful examples to uphold and which work perfectly with docile kids.

But what about the spirited child? What about the rebel who seems adamant on making you pull out every hair in your head? The child makes you wonder ‘what did I do wrong’ because it’s so hard. You never thought parenting could be so difficult, and sometimes you feel like you want to run away and hide from it… Read the rest

The Family that Works Together

We enjoy working together…what if we also want to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner together?

Working with family can be a blessing and a curse. While there is nothing more rewarding than coming to work every day and spending time with those that you love, working with family can also be challenging if not frustrating.

Your business is not worth the loss of family harmony or a joyful Thanksgiving Dinner

Children who choose work in the family business cannot expect to have a red carpet laid out for them when they come to work. Rather, they need to be prepared to come in earlier, stay later, and even work harder than non-family members. Why? It is the family business, which means that they are just as responsible for its reputation and success as any other family member in the firm.

What are some of the best ways to assure harmony when running a family business?

•Develop your children’s values and capabilities from a young age.

•Have a family mission statement.

•Instill both a competitive and service ethic and culture in the business.

•Impart the culture of the business to family members who do not work in the company.

•Build a team of owners comprised of family members.

•Have a written participation policy that explicitly covers all roles and responsibilities of a family member who wants work in the business.

•Retain key “non-family” employees in the business.

•Compensate equitably based on the basis of what the job is… Read the rest
